My message to the local shelter heads taking illegal & retaliatory actions against volunteers

In my opinion this is one of the most important videos I’ve ever made. Yes, it is a rant. But yes, it is very important. If you are a volunteer, rescuer, shelter staff member or even a manager then please consider what is being said here.

City Council meetings for San Bernardino are the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month, the next being 1/21. Councilman John Valdivia oversees the ward where the shelter is located.

City Council meetings for Rancho Cucamonga are the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month, the next being 1/16.
To email the Rancho Cucamonga City Council: council@cityofrc.us
To email the Rancho Cucamonga shelter director, Veronica Fincher: veronica.fincher@cityofrc.us

L.A. County, to the best of my knowledge, doesn’t do City Council meetings. You’d instead need to go directly to the L.A. County Board of Supervisors, also known as “the 5 little kings.” They appointed Marcia Mayeda, who oversees all of the county shelters, including Carson. She was responsible for firing Ric Browde, head volunteer at Baldwin Park, simply because he voiced his own opinion on his personal blog.

Video taken while shelter staff informs Maria that she now needs to do public records requests to obtain a report she was freely receiving prior to 1/5/13.

Shelter retaliation against volunteers is illegal, unconstitutional.

Thank you for doing this. A look at something no one wants to look at. Thank you friend.

while i do agree with the idea, i must point out that there is nothing illegal about telling a volunteer she is no longer welcome.  were she a paid employee, she’d have rights protected by law but as a volunteer, it’s up to them if they want her around or not.that being said, i have to seriously question the validity and credibility of an animal shelter who retaliates against someone who clearly was doing the animals in their care an amazing service.it makes me wonder why they wouldn’t want someone to do everything in their power to get the animals as much exposure and, therefore, maximized possibility of adoption, as possible.my conspiracy-theorist inner self wonders if, perhaps, this shelter makes more money by ensuring the dogs do NOT get adopted by private individuals or rescued by 501s……  i wonder if perhaps they have certain corporate understandings and agreements?

@threenorns Because many do not care about the animals in their care. They simply want a paycheck. It’s horrific what happens in our ‘shelters’ … abuse, killing animals because they are scared out of their minds … watch what happens and these are the facilities in very populated areas, where many ARE watching … what do you think happens in heartstick and gassing facilities ?

@threenorns Telling someone he’d prefer that she not come back is not illegal, that’s simply a suggestion but it can’t be backed by anything further. The manager implying that he actually has the authority to enforce her ban if she does not happily go along with it absolutely is illegal. Maria’s not even an official volunteer. She’s simply a member of the public, a taxpaying citizen, entering a public facility. Anyone can do that.

@JoshLiddySwayLove that’s a common misconception, that anybody can enter any business freely.  not so – the business is not “public property”.  it’s the property of the business owner (i guess in the case of the shelter, it’d be the city, so it’d be city property).  businesses have the right to kick anybody out and even ban them as long as they’re not doing it in a discriminatory manner.  f.ex, kicking her out bec she’s female or she’s a visible minority or wearing a “gay rights” shirt etc would violate her rights as a human being.  kicking her out bec they feel she is acting against their business practices would be upheld if it were taken to court.  like i said earlier, it sucks the bag bigtime and definitely would have me thinking “cold day in hell” when it came to going to them for an animal in distress but they’re sticking to the letter of the law.
